Contact Your State Legislators NOW!

Please contact your state legislators today.  Here's what to do.

Follow steps 1 through 4. OR go to our Express Email Page, courtesy of ASPCA for a one-stop quick message to your legislators.

1. Find your district legislators

Here is a link to the Washington State Legislature's website that will help you identify your state senator and representatives.  Find your District

2. Contact your legislators

Get in touch with all three of your legislators (your state senator and two state representatives).

There are several ways to do this:

a.  Send a letter by US mail (the best way to make an impression).

b.  Send an email. (Here is an email directory if you know your legislators)

c.  Call the legislative hotline 1-800-562-6000.

d.  Call your legislators' offices and leave a brief message.

3.  Important Tips on Contacting Your Legislators

a.  Contact your district legislators--not legislators in other districts.

b.  Be polite, respectful, and brief.

c.  Make you message personal.  Say why the bill's passage is important to you.

d.  Be sure to reference the bills' names and numbers:  SB 5329 and HB 1406,       companion animal spay/neuter assistance.

 e.  Include your full name and mailing address in your communications.

4.  What to Say

Here's an example of what your letter, email, or message may include.  It's important that you ask your legislator to urge the senate and house agriculture committees to pass the bill through committee.  Please include a sentence or two saying why YOU think the spay/neuter bill should be passed:

Dear Senator _____ or Dear Representative _____:

Please support passage of SB 5329/HB 1406 to provide companion animal spay/neuter assistance.  This bill is needed to save the lives of tens of thousands of dogs and cats, and in the long run will help communities save millions of dollars through avoided animal control and sheltering costs.  The spay/neuter bill has its own funding source that pet owners support.  Please assure me that you will contact Senator Hatfield and Representative Blake, chairmen of the agriculture committees, and ask them to pass the bill through committee. This bill is of statewide significance and should have a chance to be voted on by the full senate and house.

Sincerely,
